What are web push notifications?

Think of web push notifications as direct messages from your website to your users' devices - even when they're not on your site. These clickable alerts pop up on desktop or mobile, helping you stay connected with your audience without needing their email.

Why you'll love push notifications

  • instant reach: connect with users in real-time

  • high visibility: grab attention with desktop/mobile alerts

  • no email needed: users subscribe with one click

  • better conversion: drive sales with targeted messaging

  • bypass inbox chaos: reach users directly, no email required

Getting started

1. setup is easy

  1. reach out to our team at support@wisepops.com

For Shopify websites, you don't need to implement any code, push notifications are available out of the box. Reach out to us and we will activate it for you.

2. collect subscribers

  • go to "push notification" settings

  • click "Allow Web push on my website"

You can now create a popup to collect subscribers:

  • create a new popup

  • add the "web push opt-in" block

  • customize design & targeting

  • benefit: high visibility, better conversion

If you have the onsite feed on your website, you can also collect subscribers with a prompt inside the feed:

  • create a new Feed notification, select the Web push opt-in campaign as below:

  • you can create several Web push opt-in campaign for example to handle multiple languages.

  • benefits: subtle, non-intrusive approach

πŸ’‘ Pro tip: use both methods together. Our data shows:

  • feed prompt: ~0.1% conversion rate

  • popup prompt: ~1% conversion rate

  • example: with 150k monthly visitors, feed + popup prompt will get you ~ 1,650 monthly subscribers

3. Send push notifications

  1. go to the Web push section of the app

  1. Click on "New Web push campaign", then confirm with "create campaign"

  2. craft your message:

    • write an attention-grabbing title

    • add compelling message text

    • include an image (optional)

    • set your target URL

  3. select targeting rules for who will receive your message

Visitors traits are based on the moment when they subscribed to Web push for the first time. They are not updated after that.

Shopify websites have access to additional Shopify properties for targeting:

  1. send now or schedule for later

This is how browser push notifications look like:

Tracking your web push subscriber count

You can track how many visitors are subscribing to your web push notifications in the banner on top of your Web push dashboard. This counter gives the actual number of current subscribers:

  • By adding visitors who subscribed to web push using Wisepops campaigns,

  • By adding visitors who were migrated from your other web push tools

  • And by substracting previous subscribers who have unsubscribed

Smart strategies for better results

Boost your subscriber base:

  • combine both methods: sse the notification feed for a subtle, always-present option, and popups for higher visibility and conversion rates.

  • target returning visitors (they're more likely to subscribe)

  • use exit-intent popups to catch leaving visitors

  • test different timing for your popups

  • add push notification opt-in to existing popup campaigns:

    • email/phone subscription confirmation popups

    • thank you messages

Device limitations and troubleshooting

  • Device/browser limitations apply to Web push. If you have trouble testing your Web push, check this troubleshooting guide.

Switching from another service?

We make migration easy with automatic resubscription of your existing users. To do so, activate Wisepops push notifications. Here's what to expect:

  • automatic process: existing subscribers get automatically resubscribed to Wisepops when they revisit your site

  • initial dip: you might see fewer subscribers at first - this is normal!

  • better quality: expect a more engaged subscriber base long-term

πŸ’‘ Note: offline subscribers will need to revisit your site to migrate. In the meantime, you can keep using your other service to send them push notifications.

Measuring success

Track your performance in the notification dashboard:

  • subscriber growth

  • notification delivery rates

  • click-through rates

  • engagement patterns
