How to segment users in Wisepops

Wisepops offers multiple ways to segment your visitors and show targeted campaigns to specific audience groups. This guide covers all available methods, from basic to advanced targeting options.

Updated this week

Basic Targeting (Built-in)

Out of the box, Wisepops lets you target visitors based on:

  • New vs returning visitors

  • Device type (mobile, desktop, tablet)

  • Geographic location

  • Page URL

  • Time on site

  • Number of pages visited
    ...

These options are available directly in the campaign editor under Display Rules.

Advanced Targeting Methods

For more sophisticated segmentation, you have three main options:

1. Through Integrations

  • Segment.com: Target users based on user traits and events tracked in Segment

  • Klaviyo: Use subscriber segments from your Klaviyo account

  • Shopify: Access customer data, purchase history, and cart information

  • Magento: Utilize customer segments and shopping behavior

2. Using Custom Properties

Custom properties let you create your own targeting rules using data you collect about your visitors. This method requires adding JavaScript code to your website.

Key capabilities:

  • Target based on any user attribute (age, interests, purchase history, ...)

  • Use both persistent and temporary properties

  • Support for various data types (strings, numbers, dates, booleans)

3. Via Google Tag Manager

If you're using Google Tag Manager, you can define custom properties directly from GTM variables without additional coding.

  1. Decide what type of segmentation you need

  2. Choose the most appropriate method based on your technical resources and existing tools
