Important Note About Shopify Checkout Pages

Due to Shopify's platform restrictions for third-party applications like Wisepops, popups cannot be displayed on the checkout page. However, you can still effectively:

  • Target customers on the cart page (URL containing "cart")

  • Use our Shopify integration to target customers who have added items to their cart

  • Set up exit-intent triggers that work regardless of which page they appear on

This means you can trigger campaigns to appear on exit without page restrictions, focusing instead on the segment of users who are leaving your site with items in their cart.

Step-by-step tutorial

Create your campaign

  • Log in to your Wisepops account and click the "New campaign" button

  • Use the Campaign Assistant to quickly set up a cart recovery campaign

  • Edit the design to match your website's branding

  • Add your coupon code or other incentives to the popup

Configure Exit-Intent trigger

  • Go to the Display Rules section

  • From the Trigger tab, select the On Exit option

  • This ensures the popup displays when visitors are about to leave your site

Set up cart targeting (Shopify Integration)

  • Navigate to the "Advanced" section, select Shopify

  • Select the property "cart.item_count" from the dropdown

  • Add the rule: cart.item_count is greater than 0

  • This ensures the popup only displays when visitors have added items to their cart

Optional: Page Targeting

  • If you want to display the popup only on the cart page, use page targeting

  • Note: Limiting your campaign to specific pages helps reduce potential overlap with other campaigns

  • Remember that Wisepops doesn't allow more than one popup per page to preserve user experience

Publish your campaign

  • Save and publish your cart recovery campaign

Best practices

  1. Use a clear and concise message: The message on the popup should be brief and clear, letting the user know that they have left something in their cart and what the next steps are to complete the purchase. Be sure to use language that encourages urgency, such as "Don't miss out" or "Limited time offer."

  2. Make it an attractive offer: Offer an incentive like a discount, free shipping or gift with purchase to motivate the user to complete the purchase. The value of the incentive should be enticing enough to entice the user to complete their purchase.

  3. Add a countdown timer: Countdown timers create urgency and convey a sense of exclusivity, encouraging users to take immediate action. By adding a countdown timer to your cart recovery popup, you can reinforce the limited-time nature of your offer and create a sense of urgency to motivate users to complete their purchase before the time expires. Wisepops offers a countdown timer feature that you can easily add to your popup.

  4. Keep it simple: Keep the user flow from the popup simple and easy to complete to avoid losing the user's engagement. Fewer form fields, a clear call-to-action (eg: apply discount to the cart), and a simple checkout process make the purchase process more appealing.

  5. Test and optimize: Continually test the message, timing, and offer of the popup to see what works best for your audience. The optimization process will help you improve the results of your cart abandonment popups over time.

By following these steps and best practices, you can create an effective cart recovery campaign that helps you recover sales and increase conversions.
